Did you know about this counting system in Chinese

Image
There’s a reason why I love the simplicity of hand counting numbers in Chinese. You can do it with just one hand and you can count to huge amount of numbers in this way e.g. 1000 would be signed as one ten ten ten, so handy! But most importantly it’s a life saver in the busy loud markets for when you can’t talk to the shopkeepers. How many jin (unit of measure) of pork do I want? For numbers one to five it’s pretty simple… it’s the same as our system. It’s from six that it gets more complicated, but if you know the Chinese character for the numbers it makes more sense. Not I’m not telling you to give me a call, I want 6 of something! To hand sign six just extend the little finger and thumb with all the other fingers closed. Think of the sign for money, it’s the Chinese number seven, except you don’t rub your hands. The fingers are all touching whilst you point upwards. Ever play fought with imaginary hand guns as a kid, then you know how to do a number eig...

According to its website, the service is intended to pair learners of Mandarin outside China aged 5 to 12 with qualified language instructors based in China, “wherever and whenever is convenient” for the learners. Tea houses can also take a more relaxed setting, turning into a place to hang out with friends and play games like mahjong. A buffet fee allows you free flow of your favourite tea, snacks and a private room to leisurely spend an afternoon. But of course, with busy careers we might not have time to spare for such relaxing activities and get our tea fix! But not to worry, tea is everywhere, I can’t walk more than 500 meters without reaching a popular tea brand such as Gongcha, Coco, and It’s time to. Some are so popular you might have to wait 1 plus hours to get your tea… These major tea brands cater to the young with new teas such as my favourite bubble milk tea or cheese mi...

A brief introduction of Chinese characters

Image
Chinese characters are the worlds oldest form of written language, it’s also the worlds most widely used language today in terms of user number. The earliest confirmed evidence of Chinese characters discovered is that of the inscriptions carved on oracle bones from the Shang dynasty. Online learn Chinese  platform Lingo Bus is interesting.  Chinese characters are a logogram, that means each character  can have a meaning tied to a word or even a phrase. A single character can have a big meaning. If we are to believe the legends, then Chinese characters were first invented by a bureaucrat who worked for the deity the Yellow Emperor. He was so enamored with his studies of the world and its beings that he created the first characters to describe them. This is called zi. You can see how Chinese characters have evolved by looking at their change through the centuries but even now some still look like the thing they are describing. Ther...

What do you think of Chinese Buddhism

Image
Historically,  Buddhism was pretty popular among the Mandarin Chinese . It is now the second most popular religion in China, claims to have 1.87% of the population as believers. (Believe me or not, this is a big number for a pantheistic/atheistic country) The problem (well, a problem to theists) is, we have a lot of “believers”, but not a lot of “monks”. People, even those who “believe” in it, do not “follow” Buddhism. My mother likes to read about Buddhism, Daoism, Christianity, yet claims herself to be atheistic. Buddhism is thought to have been brought to China by Indian missionaries during the Han dynasty merging with the local religion Taoism. Buddhism is China's oldest foreign religion. The main difference between Chinese Buddhism in regards to its original beliefs is tied to Buddha. Chinese Buddhists believe that Buddha is not just a teacher who taught disciplines how to live their life but that he is a god to be prayed to for help. Most Buddhist rituals are al...

Love is considered a very strong word in Chinese

Image
Whether that is helping out with housework, or buying them a small token to show our appreciation, like  children learning  Chinese classes to help support their language journey. How we express love isn’t that different between cultures we all like to support and make those we love happy. Perhaps you remember from our earlier articles how numbers are important in Chinese culture, they can be used to express important meanings. There are many numbers that can be used to express love, although it would be weird to say this to someone, it’s common to send it as a text message.  The word to express love is 爱 (ài), and saying I love you couldn’t be even more simpler as it follows the same structure as in English ‘I love you’, so therefore, “我爱你” (wǒ ài nǐ ). However, in Chinese, love is considered a very strong word, and so it’s very rare to actually hear it being used.  It’s something to be saved for a married couple. Instead, we can say ‘I like you” using the...

Chinese painting is known as Guohua

Image
Chinese language learning is necessary for little kids.  Chinese realistic painting is often very colorful and with a lot of details, it involves first drawing a basic outline of the object with a thin brush in black and then meticulously coloring in the detail with specialized brushes. A famous example of this style is the painting from the Song dynasty by the artists Zhang Xuan called ‘Court ladies preparing newly woven silk’. It depicts an annual celebration where the court ladies would prepare silk, therefore opening a window to the past. See how all the court ladies are performing different tasks, and how each has been painted to express their individual character. Unlike realistic painting,ink-wash painting is based on one color, black calligraphy ink. These paintings are stunning in that details are added by having different shades of black. This is a great example of ink-wash technique done by Chen Rong is ‘nine dragons’, which plays on the Chines...
