Studying in the foreign language

Being bilingual is not easy. It does not happen overnight. Immersion, hard work, rigor, and motivation are the keywords for robust language learning.

We are not born polyglot; we become it. Kids learning chinese is not easy. This real challenge requires a vital motivation and an iron will. Few people are bilingual in a traditional language course taught at school or university for a few hours a week. If you want to master a foreign language, there are much more effective strategies.

To embark on a linguistic tandem.

If you like learning in a more privileged relationship, the tandem is for you. The principle: to carry out activities in the company of a person speaking the foreign language and eager to learn yours. The idea is to see you for at least two hours and speak the first hour in one language and the second in the other. Activities can be varied: drink, play sports, go to the cinema, bowling, go shopping, stroll, volunteer. The tandem method allows you to practice the language, to be corrected by the other and learn the vocabulary of different activities. In addition, if the friendship grows, you will be led to see you outside the tandem, which will offer you more opportunities to practice the language.

Studying in the foreign language

By taking courses in the foreign language, you will acquire the vocabulary of your sector. It is indeed always better to master the jargon of one's profession in several languages. To study in a foreign language, you can either go to live for several months in another country and enroll in a school or university on the spot, either stay in Belgium and try to take classes given in the foreign language. If you are a student, be aware that some institutions offer immersion or masters taught entirely in other languages.
