Another Way to Say You are Beautiful in Chinese

Image
Hey good-lookin’! In this post we’re covering 颜值 / yánzhí, a popular slang word in Mandarin Chinese Language at the moment that breaks-down as follows: 颜 / yán = face; beauty 值 / zhí =  number; value; (to be) worth. Together these characters have come to mean the  value  of one’s face or beauty – an “attractiveness index” (because we all know that beauty can be indexed and ranked, right?). You’ll commonly hear: Gāo yánzhí guān èr dài néng dāng hǎo zǒnglǐ ma? 高颜值 官二代能当好总理吗? Can the good-looking son of an official become a good premier? Gāo yánzhí mèizi dǎchū tàiquán guànjūn céng bèi mièchēng wèi “bābǐ” 高颜值 妹子打出泰拳冠军,曾被蔑称为 “ 芭比 ” 。 Good-looking female Muay Thai Champion contemptuously named “Barbie” Dǎyìnjī yě kěyǐ gāo yánzhí. 打印机也可以 高颜值 . Printers can also be good-looking So there you have it. Now you know how to tell someone they’re really rather attractive as it’s done in the PRC. And if you’re wondering about the opposite scenario, both  “ 颜值低 ” (

The Role Model of China- LeiFeng

Image
Professional   Lingo Bus blog is mainly about Chinese resources , welcome to write your personal comment! In Lin Biao's narrative, Lei Feng was born in 1940. He grew up an orphan as his father was killed by the Japanese imperialists and his mother was driven to suicide by a landlord. Despite Lei Feng’s suffering, he served his country. He joined the Communist Youth Corps as a child then the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) as an adult. During his time in the PLA, Lei Feng wrote a diary. It was 200,000 words long and was full of praise for Mao and the Communist Party. One of the things that Lei Feng wrote was that he wanted to be a “rust-proof screw of the revolution”. This was in response to Mao saying that China was like a revolutionary machine, where each citizen was a screw. Lin Biao wanted the Chinese to follow Lei Feng’s good example of serving party and country. So his 1963 speech about Lei Feng was not a one-off event. It was the start of a massive 向雷锋同志学习 “Learn f

Keep Fit and Discuss Dieting in China

One of my very favorite vegetables in Chinese cuisine is 空心菜, (swamp cabbage). It’s dark green and tastes amazing sautéed with lots of garlic. I was with some female colleagues when I first tried it. Curiously, they would dip every mouthful of the dish into a glass of hot water before eating it. I learned as we ate that it was a method to remove the oil. It seemed such a shame to me to water down the garlicky goodness just to cut a few calories! In China, to be svelte as a female is to be beautiful. Dieting for weight-loss is very common – definitely no less so than in the west. In recent years high-impact exercise has also been embraced much more too. Fitness is very much part of a modern lifestyle for 20-35 year-olds. Asian Girl Yoga From Tupian 114 On the extreme end, luxury weight-loss spas boasting ‘high-tech technology’ are gaining popularity too. A well-known Hong Kong spa named “必瘦站” (Bìshòu zhàn, Must be skinny station) AKA Perfect Shape has opened multiple branches acro

What do people talk about when they talk about Beijing?

Image
As a city with a 800 plus years of history, and as the Chinese capital city since 1421 BC, there are countless things to explore, from the Forbidden City to street snacks, to the great wall and even folk crafts… You name it.   More and more children are learning Chinese . Book your kids a free demo class . But its rich historical heritage sometimes leads to people ignoring that fact that Beijing is also a super metropolitan city, with a population of more than 30 million! Living in the city, there are facilities you need to use every day. They slowly become symbols attached to the city, one example is the subway. If you decide to visit Beijing, besides a credit card and some basic daily Mandarin Chinese expressions, the next most important thing you will need every day is the subway. Indeed, for Beijingers and foreigners living in the city, taking the Subway is always a love-and-hate relationship: It is so convenient that it can take you to anywhere you want to go faster than

CHINESE EDUCATION SYSTEM VS. U.S EDUCATION SYSTEM

Image
Education may be one of the most influential forces in society today. A good education that nurtures intellect and curiosity can impact children as soon as they step into the classroom. With the world’s largest population, China provides its citizens a diverse school system: public schools for students of all ages, specialized schools for the disabled, private schools and vocational schools among the many other institutions for education. M andarin classes for children are also popular now. China’s education system has three main levels, composed of Primary, Secondary, and Post-Secondary. Primary education (小学;  xiǎoxué ) is what we typically call elementary level education. Secondary school is split into Lower and Upper, called 初中 ( chūzhōng ) and 高中 ( gāozhōng ); these are equivalent to middle school and high school respectively. The separation of these grade levels usually go 6-3-3, where 1 st  to 6 th  grade would belong in elementary school, 7 th  to 9 th  in another, and 10 th
